Life Safety Surveys

Life safety surveys are a critical component of regulatory oversight for ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), ensuring that facilities meet established fire protection, building safety, and emergency preparedness standards designed to protect patients, staff, and visitors. These surveys evaluate compliance with applicable life safety codes and healthcare facility regulations, focusing on areas such as fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, means of egress, smoke compartments, medical gas systems, and emergency procedures.

Because ASCs serve patients who may have limited mobility or be under anesthesia, life safety compliance is especially important. Regular inspections help verify that facilities maintain safe environments, properly maintain life safety systems, and follow protocols that reduce risk during emergencies.

This resource page provides information and tools to help Minnesota ASCs understand life safety survey expectations, maintain compliance, and prepare for inspections.  A special thanks to Rick Huston, Deputy Minnesota State Fire Marshal with the Healthcare Division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for sharing his expertise and resources.
