The impact of rising unemployment on health insurers’ membership rolls reinforces what analysts and economists say is all but certain: that the number of uninsured likely has risen by several million since the U.S. Census Bureau in 2007 pegged it at 45.7 million. Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the number of uninsured Americans is now close to 50 million. Wall Street Journal, Thursday, April 23, 2009.
Employer health care costs are expected to rise almost 10% – double the annual inflation rate – in 2008, according to a study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers published June 17 in USA Today. The study predicts an additional 9.6% rise in 2009. Two factors are cited as driving up costs: A hospital building boom, and an increase in the expenses that people who have insurance are paying for people without insurance.

According to Fidelity Investments, an average 65-year-old couple will need $225,000 just for medical costs in retirement not covered by Medicare, up from $215,000 in 2007, published July 1 in USA Today.
